Thoughts and Praise: I'm not really one for horror, so initially I wasn't interested in this show. Then I saw someone say it was like a spooky Parks & Rec, so I decided to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did. The comedy, while not a constant occurence, is truly top notch and blended so well with the more serious elements of the show. The horror wasn't overbearing, but there were definitely still a couple freaky moments (though if you're a huge horror fan, you might not agree).

The characters are wonderful. Our main trio is mayor Tom, assitant Patricia, and old fisherman Wyck. They bounce off of each other so naturally in weird and wonderful ways. Patricia in particular is just a delight. The island is also fleshed out with a dozen or so memorable side characters that shine, even with limited screen time.

One of the big reveals at the end of the season is pretty predictable, although there was enough of a red herring to keep me questioning my instincts. The other big reveal is more unexpected, but I think it's the perfect opening for more seasons, and a lot more zany creatures and storylines to follow. I love that the show doesn't feel the need to abide by a strict canon. There's an overarching plot, but that doesn't mean there can't be a creepy clown in the hotel or a crawling sea witch.

I'm definitely looking forward to the next season!

Criticism: I would have preferred this show to keep to a more monster-of-the-week format for a bit longer than it did. The overarching plot kind of takes over for the back half of the season - while that wasn't bad, I missed the simplicity of the start a little bit. As it stands right now, I still think this show could earn a perfect rating, but we'll have to see how the subsequent seasons turn out.
